How much you prepare for Mass depends on your schedule for the week. Some weeks may be busier than others. But I hope that you can spend some time in private prayer “priming the pump” in anticipation of participating in the Mass. I always begin with the readings of the day. This week is all about vineyards. What do I know about vineyards and agriculture? Not much. I might look up information about the grape industry to get some background. If time is short, I make certain I have read and prayed (at least) with the Gospel. The point of Matthew 21:33-43 is hard to miss. Do I reject Jesus or follow him? How can I tend the vineyard and produce the fruit God has created me to produce? What is the fruit that can come from my life? What has my harvest been in the past, and what will it be in the future? Isaiah 5:1-7 brings two questions to my mind. 1) “What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done?” What has God done for me in my life? What am I grateful for? 2) “He looked . . . for justice, but hard, the outcry!” Where am I seeing injustice? What can I do about it? I always try to pray the psalm in my private prayer (Psalm 80). Sometimes I make up a chant and sing it. *God, take care of what you have planted in me. Give me new life. May your face shine upon me.* Philippians 4:6-9 has many possibilities for reflection. “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” What am I anxious about? I give those things to God with the hope that peace will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Think about these things: what is **true** (genuine, right, faithful); **honorable** (upright, admirable); **just** (fair, appropriate, merited); **pure** (untainted, wholesome, virtuous); **lovely** (beautiful, pleasant); **gracious** (kind, well-mannered, merciful). Do these words describe my actions and attitudes toward others? Can I choose one to work on during the month of October? I always try to read the Collect before Mass because the wording in the current translation is often complex. The striking part of the prayer is: *“Pour out your mercy upon us.”* Parts to ponder: God’s kindness surpasses our desires; God can pardon “what conscience dreads” (I think that means that God will pardon my sins which otherwise would lead me away from God); and God’s mercy surpasses what I dare to ask.
