Readings for the Sundays in November deal with the end times. We begin the month by celebrating All Saints' and All Souls' Days. Many parishes display a Book of the Dead with the names of parishioners who have died. Some allow people to enter names of loved ones into a book whether they were from the parish or not. These commemorations seem fitting as we come to the end of the liturgical year. They also get us ready for the great season of Advent which is almost upon us. Advent will ask the question: Are we prepared for the coming of Christ?

The wedding feast in today’s Gospel is symbolic of heaven’s banquet. We need to be wise, awake, and ready to enter the place for the feast when the bridegroom comes for us. The Eucharist we celebrate together on earth is a foretaste of this heavenly feast. The Gospel Acclamation verse is an important element of the texts for the day. “Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”

**Reflection:** In what ways have you prepared for the coming of the bridegroom? In what ways will you continue to prepare from now until Christmas and beyond?

The first reading praises the gift of wisdom. To be wise is to be able to discern what is right and good, prudent and suitable. Wisdom is understanding spiritual truth.

**Reflection:** When have you felt you have experienced the gift of wisdom in a tough situation? In what areas of your life do you need wisdom today?

Psalm 63 is full of images of longing for God. **Pray through the psalm** and think about these words from the psalm: *thirsting; seek; flesh pines; parched; lifeless; water; gazed; kindness; lifting up my hands; exultant lips; remember; meditate; help; shadow of your wings.*

The second reading leaves no doubt that we are talking about the end times. Your parish may use the shorter form which eliminates those verses. You may want to look up the longer version. I appreciate that St Paul does not want us to be unaware that we will rise again in Christ. We will grieve the loss of loved ones – it is human nature to feel sorrow at that loss. But we can console one another, and ourselves, in our belief about resurrection.

In the Collect we will pray that we have free hearts in order *to pursue the things of God* that appear in our lives on a regular basis. Pray too for wisdom *to recognize the things of God* and to choose them.
