Honoring holy men and women who died has a long history in the Catholic Church. These people are considered models for how to act in the world as Christians. The list of saints includes those who are martyred for the faith, in fact, martyrdom is a certain path to sainthood. Many saints have a day on which we remember them, such as October 4 for St Francis of Assisi. The Church realizes that there may be many more saints in heaven whose lives we do not know. November 1 is set aside as a day to honor **all of the saints**, both those we have heard of and those whose names we do not know. They are “a great multitude which no one can count.” *Rev. 7:9*

November 1 is a Sunday this year. It will replace the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, and so the readings and prayers will be for All Saints in 2026.

Revelation 7 is a wondrous account of a vision of all the saints before the throne of God. *Who are the **saints** that have influenced your life and gone before you to God? What did they teach you, and how did they teach you about living a Christian life?* (These may be people the Church honors as saints, but they be people you have met, grandparents, parents, teachers, and others who have led you to discipleship).

Psalm 24 reminds us that **we** are the people who long to see the face of God. Let us pray along with the psalmist: *May my hands be sinless, may my heart be clean, may I desire not what is vain or empty.* Verse 4

1 John 3:1-3 tells us that we are **children of God**. But think about these verses:

“Beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” *What does it mean to you to see God as God is?*

The choice of the Beatitudes for today’s Gospel is brilliant. There are few better descriptions of how we should live our lives and become saints than in these lines. Each of the Beatitudes is an examination of the attitudes and the actions of our lives.

The Beatitudes do not say that the people who get into heaven will be the ones who keep the rules, the ones who have the power, or the ones who appear pious. How do we get the reward of heaven? Live the Beatitudes. Be merciful and clean of heart and a peacemaker. Work to foster righteousness, following God’s will. Poverty of spirit isn’t just about being poor. It is about completely trusting God to meet all our needs because we know that we cannot do it on our own. Helplessness and dependence lead to detachment from the world and attachment to God. If we live the Beatitudes now, we will help build heaven on earth.

*This reading deserves meditation outside of Mass to explore the depth of what is being said and how it applies to one’s life. For what do I mourn? How do I exhibit meekness? Where do I crave righteousness? When do I show mercy or try to make peace? In what ways am I poor in spirit?*

Jesus is the model for all these attributes. Look to the life of Jesus and our own lives so that we may be “Blessed” and one day come to live as saints in the kingdom of heaven.
