Pope Leo is continuing to talk about the importance of the documents from the Second Vatican Council. On October 7, he spoke about the fourth chapter of **Gaudium et Spes** on the mission of the Church in the contemporary world.

“The first mission of the Church is to help people be attentive to the profound questions of life: those concerning our origin and our destiny, as well as those concerning the meaning of love and suffering” (#41). We are to bear “witness to faith and charity, together with commitment for justice, peace, and fraternity.” Pope Leo continues, “By worshipping Christ, the Righteous One who died for the unrighteous, the believer cannot accept the oppression of the weak and the poor, nor the unjust structures that perpetuate conditions of dependence and injustice. The social doctrine of the Church guides the actions of Christians, who collaborate with all people of good will in promoting the common good.” This is a task for the whole people of God, lay and ordained.

At the end of Mass, we are sent forth on a mission to be the hands and feet and voice of Jesus in the world. Let us remember that “Mass” come from Latin “missa” meaning “to let go, to send.” The words mission, missionary, and dismissal come from the same root word; also, the word commission – to send forth on a mission or task. Author Austin Fleming in his book, *Preparing for Liturgy* says *“The true sanctuary of liturgy is the one that recognizes the world as the sanctuary of creation and redemption. The sanctuary of liturgy is a refuge not an escape. We are eager to depart the sanctuary of the liturgy to proclaim what has been celebrated there.”*

First, we are **blessed** to go on that mission. The final blessing at Mass is with the Sign of the Cross and the blessing of the Trinity. We are unified, rooted in, branded, and healed by the cross of Christ. We have been created, redeemed, and sustained by God, and all this happens by virtue of our baptism and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Then, we are sent with the words of **dismissal.** There are two options in the Roman Missal that are more specific about our commissioning: *Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord; Go in Peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.* “There is no Christian if not on the move; no Christian if the Christian does not go out of themselves in order to set out on the journey and bear the proclamation.” Pope Francis, April 12, 2023.

There are reflection questions on the Final Blessing and Dismissal in my book, *Participation of the Heart, Deeper Engagement in the Mass.* Here are two of them:

**Blessing:** In what areas of your life do you need the blessing of God? In what areas can you be a blessing to another person? Think of a specific way to be a blessing to someone this week.

**Dismissal:** How can you bring Christ into the challenges of the upcoming week and be the hands, voice, and feet of Christ in the world?

“You are the Body of Christ. In you and through you the work of the incarnation must go forward. You are to be taken. You are to be blessed, broken and distributed, that you may be the means of grace and vehicles of eternal love.” – Easter Sermon of St Augustine
